  • Do you exercise regularly, if so why?

No, I don’t, I don’t do it because I’m lazy. I don’t feel the need too.

  • In order to lose weight, have you ever deprived yourself from eating? What makes you do this?

I’ve never had issues with losing weight, my issues were gaining weight. So, no I haven’t.

  • Do you know about healthy eating? Have you ever been on a diet? Was it successful?

Yes, I do however I haven’t been on a diet. I’ve tried to change my meal plans to gain weight but I’ve never to lose weight.

I mentioned that “You keep saying you want to gain weight, so why do you want to gain weight?”

About 5/6 years ago I drastically lost weight to the point where I was 5 and a half stones (34.9kg). I wasn’t the ideal weight that I wanted to be a few years ago and I wasn’t comfortable in my own body. I am ok now, weight wise. I’ve never wanted to lose weight; it’s never been a goal of mine. I’ve never felt a need to lose weight, it’s always just gain weight.

It was more physically as oppose to when you stand on the scales, it was more like what I physically look like because I had no weight on me. People would say ‘oh yeah, she’s anorexic’ but no I wasn’t anorexic, it was just how I physically looked, it what I didn’t like.

  • Are you dissatisfied with your current body image?

No I wouldn’t say that I’m dissatisfied, I’d say I’m quite happy now.

  • Do you care about your body image, if so why?

Yes, I think I do care because that’s one of the reason’s why I wear clothes that covers me up more.

  • Have you ever compared your body with other people’s?

Yeah, it’s just a natural thing to do everyday. Like I would compare myself to celebrities however I have learnt not to compare myself to them.

  • Do you think that there is an ideal body image for people conform?

Personally, I want to say yes and I think that’s due to my own experiences. I’d like to say yes, I think that you should be healthy, I don’t think you should be overweight. And when I said overweight, I don’t mean plumped and chubby, I mean generally overweight. And underweight as well and yeah I think it is an issue for people. But I think the normal body would be, not slim but toned.

  • If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

I want a slimmer waist.

  • If there’s a particular favourite body part, which one or two would it be?

I think my favourite body part is my bum and my lower body in general. I think my issues are from my torso upwards.

  • Is it possible to feel comfortable in society if you’re not thin?

Absolutely, there’s people out there that put’s a front image up saying ‘I’m overweight and I’m proud’ and inside they might be upset about it but there are people out there that generally does not care. And vice versa with the people who are skinny.

  • Why do you think the ideal body trends has changed through history?

I think it was around the 1900’s when the women wore corsets to get the slim waist, wide hip look. I think a women’s perfect body ideal has started from back then. However, if you look at it now, it is through media a lot, social media especially, people like the Kim Kardashian, that is a main icon for people to look at and who they want to be like. Even Nikki Minaj, just famous icons, people want to look like them. They can see people going crazy over them, it’s not just boys going crazy over them, it’s girls too! I think any type of media has had an effect on everyone. If you watch e-tv, as soon as someone drops weight, look at Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy, she’s gain a lot of weight drastically and the whole of the world was sluing her. When he sister Khloe Kardashian lost a lot of weight and then did a fitness shoot, people starting loving her all of a sudden and before they use to just think that she’s just fat and ugly.

  • Has it ever crossed your mind to look like the models in advertisement when you see them on posters and television?

I think it depends on who the model is.

  • If social media was not as advanced as it were 10 years ago do you think people would care less about their body image.

No because, if it’s not social media, it’s people out there. If social media didn’t exist you would still see models and they will be through other channels such as billboards, magazines. That’s not social media, that’s just other media’s. and of course that will affect people’s portrayal of the perfect body

  • How do you feel about your body image when you are in an exposed area such as being on a beach or in a changing room?

I don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed now. However, I did before when I was really light. Even now I would be weary. I am comfortable now but at the back of my mind I would be thinking would other people be staring at me.

  • Have you ever been to a place where you feel less body self - conscious?

Yes, I don’t think about my body in my own bedroom and house.

In addition, Charlotte said she would like to be tall as she feels she would get taken more seriously in society where as because she’s short.

Name: Daniel – Gym goer

Occupation: Student

  • Do you exercise regularly, if so why?

Yes, 5 times a week like minimum and he also plays football. One of the main reason is because I do get self conscious about my body. Back in school days I use to get kind of bullied, I think that took an effect on me and also because I play a lot of sports it does benefit me in being fitter than the average person and being good at it. That’s one of the main reasons, there are other reasons such as, I believe having a healthy body leads to having a healthy mind as well, as long as I get my hours sleep and my work outs done as well, I get my work done as well.

  • In order to lose weight, have you ever deprived yourself from eating? What makes you do this?

I do know about healthy eating but won’t say all of it. I think I know the basics; I know a bit about the advanced type of it. I see myself continuously learning, I’m always open to people’s views and listen. I’m keen to learn.

  • Do you know about healthy eating? Have you ever been on a diet? Was it successful?

I would like to say yes because the first time when I started training, I didn’t take any supplements when I was training. I was pure diet purely because I didn’t know about supplements so I didn’t take it. But what I did on my diet in which I was really proud of was that I stopped drinking fizzy drinks and eating crisps for like a year. I saw major benefits as my skin was clearly up and my body was at it’s best in my life. I felt better and really healthy to be honest.

  • Are you dissatisfied with your current body image?

I am always dissatisfied with my body image, I’m that kind of person that will be never satisfied with. It gives me the drive to work out more.

  • Do you care about your body image, if so why?

Yes, of course I have. It’s not something I want to do it’s in my instinct.

  • Have you ever compared your body with other people’s?

“I mentioned ‘athletes’”

Yes, definitely athletes, I think of athletes as role models. I see how they work out and I hopefully one day I’ll have a body like theirs.

  • Do you think that there is an ideal body image for people conform?

I would like to think so, there’s loads of different types of body image. People like to be lean like Bruce Lee however some people want to be skinny. And some people to be ‘Massive’ like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Me personally, I would like to have the equal balance.

  • If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

I am quite hairy so if I am change that I would. Physically wise I would like to have bigger, more toned legs. I want to be broader and taller. Comparing to other people they make me feel short.

  • If there’s a particular favourite body part, which one or two would it be?

My favourite body part would have to be my legs/quads or my back as I feel my back has developed the best and quickest out of all the other body parts. ‘

I mentioned “v-taped back”

Yes, the v-taper! My back has got to the point now that when I wear a t-shirt, my back looks nicer, broader. And then it comes into a thin waist. Broad shoulders and thin waist.

I then asked him “does it feel more masculine to have those features”

I personally believe so, personally for me everyone’s role model when growing up was a guy that’s muscly. And you want to be that guy, you want to be a man!

  • Why do you think the ideal body trends has changed through history?

I think perhaps bullying could have had an effect or the way technology has advanced. We have supplements now where as they didn’t have that before.

If you look at advertisement in the 1990’s it’ll most likely be a guy in a suit or a guy on the beach with a hair chest. Now, when you look at the latest roll models for example when you see a L’oreal advert it doesn’t have to be a skinny girl who is advertising as it’s about hair and shampoo yet the girl would be in good shape or just slim. Marketing now, will always have a good image and would rarely have a person out of shape in that advert.

  • How do you think the media affects the way we view ourselves?

Well as we watch TV all the time and see people in good shape. It makes you think we’ll what are we doing. And as we always compare ourselves as much as we don’t want to, it makes you feel bad because they are in better shape than you.

  • Has social media affected you, influencing you to change your body image?

Absolutely, a good example would be Instagram. Everyone wants a picture with loads of likes. A guy who is topless with a six pack will always have more likes.

  • Has it ever crossed your mind to look like the models in advertisement when you see them on posters and television?

Again, yes of course! When you see a Calvin Klein advert you think to yourself you want that body, it looks great and I can’t see nothing wrong with it. I just want to be like that.

  • If social media was not as advanced as it were 10 years ago do you think people would care less about their body image.

Definitely, I definitely l think’s so as everything has progressed such as technology and the marketing.

  • How do you feel about your body image when you are in an exposed area such as being on a beach or in a changing room?

I would say a little concerned, I feel a bit self conscious. However, If I was a bit out of shape I would work out hard to look good and feel comfortable before going to the beach.

  • Have you ever been to a place where you feel less body self - conscious?

Going to an event where the attire is formal. Everybody looks good at a formal event regardless how big or how skinny one might be. Or being in a sporting event like football when everyone is wearing the same kit.

  • Have you ever been to a place where you feel less body self - conscious?

Yes, I do exercise regularly the reason why I do it is because it makes me feel better about myself, physically and mentally. I prefer the way I look when I exercise, when I have more muscles and more lean muscle mass. It makes you feel healthier. I usually train 5/6 times a week and maybe twice a day. If I were to do cardio, I would perform my morning cardio and then weight training later on in the evening.

  • In order to lose weight, have you ever deprived yourself from eating? What makes you do this?

Yes, when I was prepping for show two years. I was on a 1000 calories deficit. I was carb cycling but I guess if you are dieting to lose fat you are depriving yourself from eating.

I asked ‘what made you do that’

In her response she said “I wanted to be lean and be ready for the stage, I really wanted to compete at that time. It was then UKBFF was beginning to grow in the UK. It was something everyone was doing for that competition and I wanted to do it as well.

  • Do you know about healthy eating? Have you ever been on a diet? Was it successful?

Yes of course,

Yes, it was successful as I was 1 week away from the stage however I could not compete as I had some personal issues, so I never made it to the stage. Even since then I have been eating very healthily anyways.

  • Are you dissatisfied with your current body image?

No, not really but you are never entirely satisfied once you’re in the bodybuilding world.

Once you’ve built some gluteus you will always see someone better than you and that makes you not satisfied. I’m not unhappy with it because I know I’m better than the average person who doesn’t exercise but there is always room for improvement.

  • Do you care about your body image, if so why?

Yes, I do, I would not want ‘fat rolls’.

I then asked ‘why’

In which she said ‘I guess it’s also about success, the more successful people can make time in their lives to take care of themselves and their careers and it just makes you feel good about yourself. It would improve your self confidence as well. When I’m a bit heavier after Christmas, my clothes definitely aren’t as loose and I wouldn’t wear tight clothes.

  • Have you ever compared your body with other people’s?

I guess as I use a lot of social media such as Instagram and Facebook, you see these fitness, bikini models who are lean all year round and it makes you want to be just like them.

  • Do you think that there is an ideal body image for people conform?

I think it’s different all around the world for example my body type is quite muscular and it fits well here in the UK as oppose to when I go to Hong Kong, everyone is just like ‘why are you building so much muscle and why is your bum so big’. To summarise that, In the UK people like my body type where as in Hong Kong it is less approving.

  • If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

Probably my breasts but that stems from the competing world. Like you can build your gluteus but you can’t build your breasts. I went to a posing workshop and asked one of the UKBFF judges ‘Do you need big breasts to be ahead’ and her answer was ‘I shouldn’t really say this but on the down low, you do as it helps with the hourglass figure’. *Kayanee mentioned having bigger breasts – surgery

  • If there’s a particular favourite body part, which one or two would it be?

My favourite body part would probably be my Glutes and legs.

  • Is it possible to feel comfortable in society if you’re not thin? female

Yes, It’s all about self confidence. There are lots of plus size models who are really pretty and gorgeous face however they are not thin. I do get self conscious sometimes because for a Chinese girl I’m not typically thin. I have to remind myself that I’m working for my muscles and I’m working for my shape.

  • Why do you think the ideal body trends has changed through history?

I suppose it’s more publications, social media and more magazines. People focus on it more with more articles.

  • How do you think the media affects the way we view ourselves?

I think it does affect it people a bit, like you will never really see an ugly person on the front of a magazine cover. If they do they might see a fall in sells or something.

  • Has it ever crossed your mind to look like the models in advertisement when you see them on posters and television?

I think you can use them as an inspiration but in the back of my mind I know it’s not achievable as they have been Photoshopped and it is not 100% real!

  • Has social media affected you, influencing you to change your body image?

Yes, it has most definitely affected me as I use my social media for motivation, you know like when you see athlete’s looking amazing and you think that that’s the ideal body image I want. It inspires me to look just as good. You see their abs, you see the way they eat and it’s like a popularity thing as well, like how many likes you can get. If a photo has a lot of likes, then you can see that people like their image and want to perhaps be like them. I think a sociological thing; you just want to be liked.

  • If social media was not as advanced as it were 10 years ago do you think people would care less about their body image.

Probably yes, as social media makes more people accessible, you see what is out there. Where as ten years ago, you only see celebrities who are out there so now you can see celebs and non celebs. There’s all these fitness models that you might not necessarily know unless you’re into the bodybuilding world. So there’s more people for you to be inspired to be like I think.

  • How do you feel about your body image when you are in an exposed area such as being on a beach or in a changing room?

I have no shame; I really don’t mind it. In the gym, everyone is getting naked in the same place so I don’t really mind. On the beach, I feel a little bit self conscious but I know that because I work out, I am better than the average person. Even if I think I’m fat and a little bit bloated it’s ok.

  • Have you ever been to a place where you feel less body self - conscious?

Yes, it was in Korea and we were in a Korean spa like the springs. The girls and boys were in different changing rooms but everyone had to be naked to keep the spring pure. There was a lot of bits on show everywhere. I didn’t feel so exposed as everyone was just butt naked.

Names: Ken & Susanna

(Ken - Non Gym goer, Susanna - Gym Goer)

Ages: 23, 22.

Sex: Male, Female

Status: Both Single

Occupation: Both Students

  • Do you exercise regularly, if so why?

Ken: No, firstly it’s because I’m kind of lazy and secondly it’s because of the whether. During the winter time is quite cold and If I’m going to exercise, I will only do this is summer time because of the sun.

Susanna: Yes, I do! I probably exercise 2/3 times a week, purely because I like staying fit and I feel quite bad if I don’t. even if it’s like a little run around the park. I feel like it’s good as it clears my brain and it helps me with my work sometimes.

  • In order to lose weight, have you ever deprived yourself from eating? What makes you do this?

Ken: No, I wouldn’t do that. If I was to loose weight, I would at least eat healthy. I would not starve myself as it would make your body worse than before.

Susanna: No, I have never starved myself and I don’t plan on doing it either.

  • Do you know about healthy eating? Have you ever been on a diet? Was it successful?

Ken: Yes, I have, well I have tried a few times and then I just give up. However, I did see some results from my diet. I stayed away from greasy foods.

Susanna: No, I have never been on a diet.

I asked Susanna if she ate quite healthily anyway in which her response was…

Yeah, I guess I eat quite healthy anyway. If I ate bad foods, I guess it would give me more of a reason to go on a diet.

  • Are you dissatisfied with your current body image?

Ken: No, I am not. I am not dissatisfied. I’m quite satisfied.

Susanna: No, I am not dissatisfied either.

  • Do you care about your body image, if so why?

Ken: Yes, I care a lot, I am very self-conscious. I’m quite self-conscious on how people are going to judge my body and my image.

Susanna: Yes, I do. I care about it because it’s a personal thing and if I was abusing it like eating loads of rubbish and not exercising, I think it would just have a negative impact on my wellbeing. I wouldn’t feel satisfied.

  • Have you ever compared your body with other people’s?

Ken: No, I wouldn’t compare myself to other people’s body. If I was working out, then yeah perhaps but I don’t so no.

Susanna: I have but only when I am in the gym. Only when I’m around girls who have (only in a positive way) a more toned arm. I think ‘oh that’s good’ and maybe I could try and get a bit more muscle.

I then suggested what if you compared yourself with an athlete or a celebrity?

Ken: I still wouldn’t. Maybe I would compare myself to someone who is the same occupation like a student or someone who doesn’t workout.

Susanna: I don’t think I would compare myself to an athlete, I would get inspiration from the athlete.

  • Do you think that there is an ideal body image for people conform?

Ken: It’s really personal. The ideal body image for me is that you don’t look obese or look too skinny.

Susanna: I agree with Ken. I think it’s a personal thing as some people are going to be stricter with themselves and have more of an ideal of how they want their body to look.

  • If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be?

Ken: I would love to have broader shoulders as I feel it makes you look good when you are wearing particular clothes. When I go clothes shopping and try on some clothes, I feel my shoulders are too small and even when I pick a smaller size, the garments still seem to fit loose.

Susanna: I think for me; I would like to get more muscle in my arms haha.

I asked them what about the abs in which they both responded with…

Ken: Yeah, I think having a nice chest and abs is nice. Looks nice when you’re wearing a shirt.

Susanna: Yeah, I think having abs is nice too.

  • If there’s a particular favourite body part, which one or two would it be?

Ken: I think my legs as they are not muscular but they are still quite big, healthy looking as I walk a lot. (toned)

Susanna: My legs and my stomach like when I’ve been exercising loads, like ab exercises.

  • Is it possible to feel comfortable in society if you’re not thin?

Ken: It’s really personal as well as it depends on the person. Some people worry about how people are going to judge them especially females I think.

Susanna: I think if I was over weight and surrounded by girls who were quite slim, I think that’s when I’ll feel a bit negative.

  • Why do you think the ideal body trends has changed through history?

Susanna: As we are evolving in society, we are being more exposed. The media the celebrities, I think that’s having an impact and why everyone is changing.

Ken: I agree with Susanna.

  • How do you think the media affects the way we view ourselves?

Ken: I think because of advertisement and the media that only present

a good image. I guess it can make you feel bad about yourself sometimes but personally it doesn’t effect me.

Susanna: I was at the hair dresser the other day and I was flicking through a magazine. Page after page there were all these beauty ladies and perfect bodies and it doesn’t make you feel good. It makes you feel negative about yourself. Bare in mind they have all been photo shopped and air brushed so it’s all fake but it’s hard to remember that.

  • Has it ever crossed your mind to look like the models in advertisement when you see them on posters and television?

Ken: No, not really.

Susanna: No because I know I will never be able to look like that. They’ve spend a lot of money on like doing their hair, make up.

In the end they both said “because it’s fake too”

  • Has social media affected you, influencing you to change your body image?

Ken: I would say no not social media; I would say in real life they would. If I saw someone who is healthy in real life maybe, I’ll follow what they are doing or follow the advice from the actual person rather than on social media. Personally I don’t trust social media.

Susanna: No it hasn’t but I can understand why people are effected by it.

  • If social media was not as advanced as it were 10 years ago do you think people would care less about their body image.

Ken: Yeah, think so. The media somehow effects people and it definitely effects more than a few decades ago as there is a lot more exposure and better technology. It’s easier to get information from the internet now.

Susanna: Yes, I think so too.
